The visible gap is not always the usable gap
Acoustic slat panels often look regular from a distance, but the working clearance between two slats can vary slightly because of wood tolerances, edge shape, adhesive position or the felt backing. If an accessory enters or presses against the gap, the narrowest practical clearance matters more than one generous measurement.
Measure at several positions
Use a caliper when possible and measure the same gap near the top, middle and lower part of the panel. Repeat the check on more than one pair of slats. Record the minimum, typical and maximum measurements rather than reporting only one number.
Check what the accessory actually touches
Some accessories only use the gap as clearance while the clamp grips the sides of the wooden slats. Others rely on a shaped feature that enters the gap. A third design may compress the felt slightly. These approaches need different allowances, so a supplier should be told how much space is truly available.
Felt can change the effective clearance
PET felt can sit proud of the wood edge or compress under light pressure. If a design depends on pushing past the felt, ask whether repeated installation could mark or distort the backing. For a clean reusable system, it is usually better to define a predictable contact surface.
Build tolerance into the buying decision
A part that fits one sample perfectly can be too tight on another production batch if the design has no tolerance. For B2B orders, request the nominal panel dimension plus an acceptable fit range. Adjustable or slightly compliant geometry can be useful where several panel sources are involved.
A useful specification to send a supplier
- Minimum and maximum gap width
- Slat width and depth
- Edge profile if rounded or chamfered
- Felt position and thickness
- Whether the accessory may touch the felt
- Intended load and use
A simple cross-section drawing makes these details much clearer than a front-view photo.
